Kohima: Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, MLA and advisor for School Education, demanded better waste management in Nagaland this Thursday. He spoke at the Kohima Municipal Council waste plant in Lerie during the close of the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign. The event, pushed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, highlighted the urgent need for local action.

Yhome warned that state funding depends on following 16th Finance Commission rules. He noted that the state must satisfy specific compliance steps to grab its share of a 732 crore rupee allocation. Nagaland lacks the three-tier Panchayati Raj system used elsewhere, which complicates development funding. The MLA urged officials to visit other cities to borrow effective practices. "Things we don’t know, we learn from others," Yhome said.

Changing lifestyles and fast food habits have spiked waste output across the state. Yhome insisted that waste management is now a massive challenge for developing societies. He suggested that citizens switch to transparent garbage bags to improve disposal standards. There is money to be made here. Yhome noted that waste management holds potential as a profitable business if handled well.

The event included a welcome address from KMC chairman Neibodzelie Solo and a speech by SDO Er. Khaoshai. KMC councillor Ruokuovolie Rutsa chaired the meeting, while pastor Ketholelie Seletsu led the invocation. Azi Rudy sang for the crowd before KMC CEO Alemyapang Longchar closed the program. Yhome wants citizens to push a positive narrative to keep Kohima clean.
