Landslide Crisis Intensifies in Wokha Colony

Kohima: A slow-moving landslide in Wokha's Lower Etsuchukha Colony is tearing through homes as monsoon rains batter the area. Ground subsidence has plagued this neighborhood since 2020. The earth is sinking.

Two houses are already gone. Several families fled for safety, but others remain trapped by poverty and a lack of options. Most properties in the colony show deep cracks, tilted floors, and ruined structures. Bathrooms have vanished into the mud, and livestock sheds are destroyed. The slide now sits just meters from kitchens and living spaces.

Residents claim officials previously collected bank details to process compensation, but the money never arrived. Current retaining walls and patches are failing. Colony chairman Yilobemo Humtsoe reports that 10 houses face severe damage, while almost every household in the area feels the impact. He issued a blunt plea to state authorities: "I appealed to the government and concerned departments to conduct an immediate assessment and provide assistance before the situation worsens."

Heavy rain continues to fall across the state. Locals fear more homes will collapse without an immediate, government-led intervention.
