Kohima-Mao Highway set for ten-hour closure Tuesday

Kohima: The Kohima District Magistrate ordered a ten-hour shutdown of the Kohima-Mao section of National Highway-2 this Tuesday, August 4. The road will close from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Crews need the time to secure the Phesama sinking area. Falling boulders threaten passing cars.

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited reported rocks tumbling from slopes between Chainage Km 191+840 and Km 192+100. This danger forced the order. Heavy Motor Vehicles cannot use the route during these hours.

Light Motor Vehicles have a detour. They will run through Kisama-Kigwema by the Phesama Rhododendron Resort for two-way traffic. Manipur-bound heavy trucks must take the Peren District route. For emergencies, drivers can use the Kohima-Jessami or Chakhabama-Zunheboto roads if they respect load limits.

District Magistrate B Henok Buchem asked for public patience. "The District Magistrate of Kohima has ordered the temporary closure of a section of National Highway-2 passing through the Phesama sinking area on August 4 to facilitate restoration work and ensure public safety," the order read. Cooperation helps finish the work fast.
