Shillong: Jaintia Students Union members intercepted three suspected Bangladeshi nationals at Lad Demithring on Sunday. The suspects were traveling in a white tourist vehicle, registration ML 04 E 3485, which is owned by Treibor Kyndait of Shkenpyrsit. The student group handed the trio over to the Jowai Police immediately.
JSU Education Secretary Bocheru Mi Pohsnem confirmed the group filed an official FIR at the Jowai Police Station. The situation took a dark turn shortly after the arrest. Brokers approached the union with cash to secure the freedom of the detainees. The group refused the money. "The union rejected the offer and insisted on legal action," Pohsnem said.
The JSU now demands a thorough police probe into the network moving illegal immigrants through the region. They want the authorities to identify and prosecute every person involved in the trafficking operation.
