Shillong: Meghalaya kicked off a 100-km cleanliness drive on Friday. The stretch runs from Nongpoh to Sohra. It falls under the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign. The Directorate of Urban Affairs organized the effort. They operated under the theme Ek Din, Ek Saath, Ek Ghanta. Students, community groups, and government departments joined the work.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar flagged off 24 vehicles to assist. This fleet included 18 light vehicles and six trucks. Dhar warned that the government cannot manage waste alone. "Cleanliness requires sustained public participation," he said. He plans to build scientific waste-management facilities in Jowai, Tura, and Nongpoh. The state is also looking to fund similar infrastructure in large villages.
The event drew top officials including Commissioner and Secretary SC Sadhu and Shillong Municipal Board CEO PK Boro. NEEPCO also held its own Swachh Bharat Diwas 2026 at their Shillong office. They hosted folk musician Silbi Passah and former footballer Eugeneson Lyngdoh. Managing Director K. Shanmugha Sundaram led the call to honor local sanitation workers.
Jowai Municipal Board workers targeted major commercial hubs. They cleaned Tympang Iawmusiang, CNI, and Seinraij. Their drive runs from September 17 to October 17. CEO D.V. Lyngdoh pushed for strict waste segregation at the source. She wants trash placed only in designated bins. Board Chairman P Lyngdoh and Daloi Puramon Kynjing joined local shopkeepers and scouts to finish the job.
