Shillong: A total of 134 girl students from Jowai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School earned their certificates on Saturday. They finished a five-day self-defence course in Meghalaya. The District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) under the Social Welfare Department of West Jaintia Hills ran the event. They partnered with Happy Red Rooster from Shillong to host the sessions.
The training occurred from September 14 to 19 at the Jubilee Hall in the Jowai Presbyterian Church, Mission Compound. It fell under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative. The course taught basic moves to boost safety and confidence for women. School teacher A. Lamare thanked the organizers. She noted that the training helps girls stay ready and confident during unsafe situations.
Founder of Happy Red Rooster, Isaiah, pushed the students to keep practicing their new skills. He told the girls, "He also stressed the need to remain alert, composed and disciplined while dealing with challenging situations." The final day included a recap of moves and student stories.
F.G.N. Ryngnga, the District Mission Coordinator for DHEW, thanked the attendees and urged them to keep training. He also told the students to contact the police or authorities if they face any threats. S. Lamare, a Gender Specialist for DHEW, chaired the concluding session.
