Shillong: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar launched the Jaintia Artists Association on October 24. The event took place at Madan Ryngkaw in Tpep Pale, Jowai. It brings together singers, musicians, and performers from Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills. West Jaintia Hills Assistant Commissioner Emelya Ch. Momin attended as guest of honour alongside local dignitaries and association members.
Dhar told the crowd that artists need grit. He pushed the performers to stay dedicated to their craft despite the challenges of the music industry. The government is currently pushing programs like the Grassroot Music Projects to boost self-employment for young people. Dhar wants the state, society, and artists to work together to grow the local creative sector.
Momin praised the region's long musical history during her speech. She claimed the new group will help creators grow. She noted, "The organisation would provide a common platform for artists to collaborate, exchange ideas and showcase their talents."
Pynche Lakiang chaired the launch event. Association President Redeamson Pakma spoke first to lay out the group's goals. The ceremony wrapped up with live sets from various local performers who showcased the diverse musical traditions of the Jaintia Hills.
