Shillong: The Jaintia Students Movement wants a crackdown on non-tribal trading. On October 12 in Jowai, the group submitted a formal petition to the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council. They met with J. Suiam, the Executive Member in charge of Non-Tribal Trading and Taxes. The group wants clean records. They need to root out fake, expired, and unauthorized documents.
The JSM proposed a new digital tracking tool. They want a QR code system linked directly to the council database. This tech would let officials check license status and renewal dates in seconds. It aims to cut through the red tape and stop fraud. The group insists on protecting indigenous interests above all else. They told the council that licenses should not go to non-tribals if locals are already qualified for those jobs.
Routine field checks must happen. The organization expects the council to take legal action against any business breaking the rules to rebuild public trust. The JSM made their position clear in the memorandum. "Our demand is simple: verify the license, verify the official record and enforce the law according to due process," the JSM stated.
