Shillong: C&RD Minister and Jirang MLA Sosthenes Sohtun launched development projects worth Rs 1.46 crore in Byrnihat this Friday. The initiative aims to scrub the industrial hub of its heavy pollution. Projects funded under the National Clean Air Programme for 2023-24 target 20 villages.
The plan provides six electronic waste collection vehicles and three mechanical road sweepers. Over 1,000 households will receive new dustbins to handle waste. The official ceremony took place at Moonlight English Secondary School with local leaders in attendance.
Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Dr. Abhishek Saini and Umling BDO Eric Kevin Dkhar joined the event alongside representatives from the PWD and the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board. Sohtun praised the administration for securing the central funding. He pushed residents to take ownership of the equipment.
"Environmental protection cannot be the government’s responsibility alone," Sohtun said. Officials noted that residents must participate to fix the area's air quality. Byrnihat remains under pressure as one of the world's most polluted locations.
