Guwahati: Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjit Dass inspected the construction site for a new legislative complex in Khanikar, Dibrugarh, on Monday. The facility will house 200 members, prepping for future growth in constituency numbers. The current assembly holds 126 members.
The state government sanctioned Rs 284 crore for this project. It serves as a cornerstone for the proposed second capital. State Capital Region Development Authority Chairman and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan joined the tour alongside District Commissioner Bikram Kairi, government officials, and Public Works Department engineers.
Plans currently undergo revision. Officials intend to bump the number of residences for legislators from 126 up to 175. This shift addresses long-term capacity needs. Dass promised to protect local character during the build. The design will reflect Dibrugarh heritage and culture. It also creates space to honor local figures and drive tourism.
Dass eyes a tight timeline. He expects a legislative session to occur at the site within three years. "Within the next three years, during the tenure of the present 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, one session of the Assembly will be held at the new complex in Dibrugarh," said Dass. This move marks a major shift for the city.
