Guwahati: The Dibrugarh Press Club wants action. They sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi this Wednesday demanding the airport launch regular scheduled night flights. They also want officials to speed up the transition to an international airport. The group previously sent similar requests in December 2023, December 2024, and May 2025.

Club President Manash Jyoti Dutta, Vice President Anil Kumar Poddar, and General Secretary Ripunjoy Das signed the plea. They argue Dibrugarh is now Assam's second capital. It acts as the industrial and healthcare hub for Upper Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. The airport sees millions of travelers, yet remains stuck in a single-shift operation. Night landing gear has existed since 2010, but a shortage of airport staff and CISF personnel prevents full use.

The memorandum noted the facility's growing importance, stating, "the absence of evening and night flight services continues to inconvenience business travellers, patients, students, tourists, defence personnel and working professionals."

Infrastructure upgrades are underway, including a new ATC and CNS complex. Work on a new terminal and advanced radar system continues. The Press Club wants these projects finished to link the region with Southeast Asia under the Act East Policy. They copied the memo to Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Local officials including Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi, and Airport Director Bangajit Saha also received the document.
