Brahmaputra Erosion Endangers Historic Kahai Spur in Dibrugarh

Guwahati: The Brahmaputra is eating away at the historic Kahai Spur in Dibrugarh. Erosion at Spur No. 1 near Maijan puts the town's entire river protection system at risk. Built in 1955, this structure remains the longest and most vital barrier against the river. Boulders and iron frames are failing. Several large rocks washed into the river on Tuesday morning.

Locals demand action. Workers are dumping geo-bags to slow the damage, but this is only a temporary fix. Bhaskar Jyoti Saikia, a local resident, described the situation: "Kahai Spur is one of the significant spurs in Dibrugarh. Erosion has been going on in the area. The concerned department has reached the spot and taken immediate measures by dumping geo-bags. The geo-bag dumping is a temporary solution. We need a permanent solution to save Dibrugarh from unabated erosion, which is posing a threat to the existence of the historic city."

Saikia noted the spur manages the river current. The Asian Development Bank surveyed this stretch two years ago. They suggested mega bags, but that project skipped this specific area. Residents now want the government to secure the full 8.5-kilometer Dibrugarh Town Protection dyke. They need scientific intervention before the river breaks through.
