Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya visited the Nagaghuli Ghat restoration site in Dibrugarh on Wednesday. He checked repair progress on the Oakland dyke between Nagaghuli and Philonoguri. Water Resources Department officials joined the Governor to talk about structural safety and ways to harden the embankment against future floods.
The project keeps the Brahmaputra riverbank stable near the Maijan wetlands. It shields 23 villages, roughly two lakh residents, and over 1,050 hectares of farmland. Crews used geo-bags and porcupine structures to break the current and stop erosion. Acharya noted the project was undertaken in response to rapid erosion along the Brahmaputra.
Acharya wants to turn the riverfront into a public space. He proposed planting trees along the embankment and building tourism sites for local youth. He insists that flood safety stays the main goal. Additional Chief Engineer Samiran Deka and Executive Engineer Pradip Das provided technical updates to the Governor. Joint Secretary Arindam Barua and Deputy Development Commissioner Nandita Baruah also attended the site visit.
