BIS Raids Assam Jewelry Shop Over Counterfeit Gold Hallmarks

Guwahati: Bureau of Indian Standards officials raided Ma Kali Jewellers on Bijni-Panbari Road in Assam's Chirang district. The Guwahati-based team launched the operation after receiving tips that the shop sold gold marked with counterfeit hallmarks. They aim to stop fraud. By targeting this store, the agency hopes to force compliance with national quality standards and protect local buyers.

Using fake hallmarks is a crime. The BIS Act of 2016 gives the agency authority to pursue legal action against any store caught cheating customers with misleading labels. The bureau confirmed that enforcement drives will continue across the region to crack down on these illegal practices.

"The use of fake hallmarks to mislead customers is a punishable offence under the law," the BIS stated. Officials are now urging the public to check the authenticity of every piece of jewelry before they buy. Checking the mark helps ensure the gold is real.
