Thieves Steal Crores in Gold from Assam Retired Professor's Home

Guwahati: Thieves cleaned out a retired professor’s home in Chorgola, Sribhumi district, on September 21. They made off with gold jewelry valued at crores. The robbery started at 3 am. Asit Chakraborty, who once taught at CVP College, was home alongside his wife, Sangeeta, and daughters, Sagnika and Anka. Everyone was asleep.

The burglars cracked a locker to grab the haul. They took items gathered over 25 to 30 years. This included Sangeeta Chakraborty’s wedding jewelry and pieces saved for the future marriages of her daughters. The intruders dumped the empty boxes near a nearby forest before disappearing into the night.

The family says there are no CCTV cameras on their street to catch the culprits. They filed a First Information Report at the Tarapur Police Station in Silchar. Local residents are rattled by the crime, especially with the approach of Durga Puja. The family remains deeply distressed. For the victims, the lost jewelry was more than just metal. As the family noted, the stolen goods represented "decades of savings and plans for their daughters’ future." Police are now scouring for evidence to identify the suspects.
