Suspected Robber Shot During Escape Attempt in Assam

Guwahati: A suspected robber named Borat Ali took a bullet to the leg late Friday night. The shooting happened near Naranarayan Setu in the Bongaigaon district of Assam. Ali, a resident of Krishnai in the Goalpara district, was in police custody at the time. Officers were transporting him to the Jogighopa Police Station following his arrest that afternoon.

Ali asked for a pit stop near the bridge. He claimed he needed to urinate. Darkness provided cover for his move. He attacked constable Kamal Ray and made a run for it. Officers fired three rounds to stop the suspect. One bullet hit Ali in the right leg. Police recovered a country-made pistol from him during the arrest.

The incident ties back to an August 19 heist in Kherpuji. Six men from the Khasi community in Nongstoin, Meghalaya, traveled there to buy an old vehicle. They were assaulted and robbed of more than Rs 5 lakh. Police named Ali as the mastermind behind that crime. Local authorities took the wounded suspect to the Chalatapara Community Health Centre before moving him to the Bongaigaon Medical College for treatment. The officer involved in the scuffle also sustained injuries during the struggle. Regarding the capture, police stated, "A suspected robber was injured in a police encounter at Jogighopa in Assam's Bongaigaon district late Friday night, August 21."
