Kohima: BJP leaders in Nagaland met in Dimapur on November 7 to push back against opposition claims regarding the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The event, part of the Loktantra Bachao, Bheed Tantra Hatao campaign, took place at the BJP Dimapur District Office. Party officials from Chümoukedima, Niuland, and Dimapur districts collaborated on the session.
Attendees signed a memorandum to the President of India. They intend to defend the independence of the Election Commission of India. Guest speaker Arvind Damani, National Vice President of the BJYM, dismissed claims that the BJP controls the revision process. He insisted the Election Commission handles the work independently. The process runs through November 25.
Damani addressed the controversy surrounding a reported 13 crore voter deletions. He stated these numbers represent flags for verification, not finalized removals. The flags cover deceased persons, permanent shifts, absent individuals, and duplicates. Specifically, 2.8 crore are listed as dead, 6.3 crore as shifted, 3 crore as untraceable, and 1 crore as duplicates. Damani noted that India sees nearly one million deaths annually. He argued that gaps between the current revision and the 2002 to 2004 cycle make these adjustments necessary.
He defended the process as a tool to weed out illegal immigrants while ensuring valid voters remain on the rolls. Damani criticized political opponents for stoking fear. He specifically targeted calls for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. "Constitutional authorities must function without undue political interference or pressure," Damani said. The session also highlighted updates to Form 6 to help new voters register. V. Shekishe Achumi chaired the event, with Ankit Jain providing the vote of thanks.
