Guwahati: The Assam Nagarik Sanmilan slammed police for detaining Rahul Gandhi, opposition leaders, and activists during a protest in New Delhi. The group spoke out on Wednesday following an incident outside the Prime Minister's residence. Protesters originally gathered on July 20 under the Cockroach Janta Party banner to oppose recent police conduct against students.
The organization claims police shoved Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during the demonstration. They say hired goons beat students while officers engaged in violence to smear the protesters. The group demanded a People's Inquiry Commission led by a retired Supreme Court judge to investigate the chaos.
Minister of State Jitendra Singh arrived while Gandhi held a dharna, hoping to talk him into leaving. When talks stalled, police dragged the Leader of the Opposition and his peers away. The group stated, "The manhandling of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi by the police is deeply disturbing and exposes the authoritarian character of the BJP government."
Opposition members took the protest to the Prime Minister's doorstep after Parliament blocked their efforts to discuss paper leaks. The Sanmilan argued the government lost all credibility by dodging accountability. Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Paresh Malakar, Shantanu Barthakur, and Abdul Mannan signed the statement. They urged the public to stay peaceful.
