Guwahati: Unidentified individuals are seizing hundreds of bighas of sandbar land near Kaziranga National Park. The affected stretch sits between the Bihdubi area of Silghat and the Burha Luit, right next to the park's sixth addition. Local middlemen are allegedly helping these squatters clear the ground to start farming. The threat is real.
These sandbars serve as essential habitats and movement paths for local wildlife. Conservationists and residents warn that the invaders are putting up electric fences around their new plots. This creates a deadly trap for roaming animals. The public fears that if this activity continues, the squatters will settle permanently, making it impossible to clear them out later. Locals stated: "Residents and sections of civil society have urged the Kaziranga National Park authorities to conduct an immediate assessment of the area and take necessary measures to prevent further encroachment."
Activists are demanding an urgent investigation from park officials. They want a total stop to the unauthorized farming and the immediate protection of these vital corridors. The goal is to keep the area free of human interference so the park's wildlife can travel safely.
