Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed out more than 1,000 Braille units to visually impaired residents this Tuesday, September 1. The state government finished this effort during the initial 100 days of the current NDA 3 administration. Braille relies on raised-dot patterns to help blind people read and write.
Sarma touted the program on X as a push to aid local learning. The chief minister began his second consecutive term in May 2026. He remains focused on highlighting successes from this specific 100-day window. The kits serve to bring more residents into the fold of the state's recent progress.
Sarma framed the project as a way to ensure everyone keeps pace with current events. "While some of my young friends may not be able to see the development happening in Assam, they will definitely be a part of this transformation," the chief minister said. Officials believe these tools will bolster inclusive education across the state.

Beyond the classroom, Sarma challenged IIT Guwahati to solve gritty real-world problems. He urged the institute to tackle flood-resilient infrastructure, scientific river management, and urban nightmares like drainage, waste, and traffic congestion. He wants researchers to push harder into semiconductors, surgical robotics, and AI-driven credit systems for women-led businesses.
Sarma framed his roadmap for the state around a concept he calls Tea, Tree and Tech. He wants the region to move past its history of being a late bloomer by forcing a marriage between traditional resources and high-end manufacturing. To lock in this human capital, the state government will bankroll 100 scholarships for IIT Guwahati students, with details currently being hashed out by institute Director Devendra Jalihal.
