Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma marked Teachers Day on Saturday, September 5, with a public promise to back the state's educators. He highlighted their fundamental role in building a robust society. The state government intends to keep working on professional growth initiatives to help teachers perform their duties with greater effectiveness.
Sarma addressed the public in a social media post. He stated, "Teachers lay the foundation of a strong society and I have always been a vocal supporter of their welfare and growth, despite facing many difficulties." He further clarified the government's ongoing stance on the matter. "Today, on #TeachersDay, we reiterate our commitment towards their welfare and empowering them to teach better," he wrote.
Teachers Day falls on September 5 every year. It honors the birth anniversary of the late Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a former President of India and a renowned educationist.

Beyond education policy, Sarma signaled a ramped-up offensive against child marriage. The Chief Minister pointed to a recent United Nations move naming November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage as proof that Assam is on the right track. He stated, "Assam’s fight against child marriage ignited a national narrative, and now carries the weight of global recognition."
Sarma claimed the state has already booked over 12,000 cases and locked up more than 11,000 people. According to his office, the crackdown slashed child marriage rates by 81 percent across 20 districts while bumping up female enrollment in college and cutting teenage pregnancy numbers. The government is planning an unapologetic campaign throughout November to hunt down perpetrators and protect the future of the state's daughters.
