Guwahati: Floods in Assam reached a breaking point Sunday. One more person died in Sivasagar, pushing the annual death toll to five. Water levels keep rising across seven districts. Over 57,000 people now face the deluge. That is a massive spike from the 24,000 reported just one day earlier.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma put the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force on standby. Forces will assist with rescue and evacuation if the water level forces the issue. Sarma stated, "The safety of residents remains the government's highest priority and added that he is monitoring the situation continuously to ensure timely action wherever necessary."
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports that Charaideo hit 24,000 affected residents, Dhemaji topped 22,000, and Dibrugarh logged over 4,000. Floods submerged 298 villages. Nearly 3,875 hectares of farmland are gone. Roads, bridges, and embankments suffered significant damage. The Burhidihing River still flows above danger levels at Chenimari. More than 37,500 livestock and poultry are also impacted.
Cabinet ministers Ajanta Neog, Bimal Borah, Keshab Mahanta, and Susanta Borgohain are touring the region. Relief camps now house 440 people. State Disaster Response Force teams pulled 10 people to safety in Charaideo. Authorities handed out rice, pulses, salt, and mustard oil to help displaced families survive.
Separately, a group of Muslim women in Nagaon petitioned the Chief Minister on Monday. These women claim they are victims of polygamy. They submitted a memorandum demanding the immediate firing and arrest of any government employee who practices polygamy. They also voiced support for the Uniform Civil Code, arguing it is essential to protect their rights and dignity.
