Guwahati: More than 200 artists, writers, and intellectuals are pressuring Assam's Opposition parties to bury their differences. The group, representing the Asom Nagarik Sanmilan, claims the current political landscape is failing. They issued an appeal signed by Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Paresh Malakar, Shantanu Borthakur, and Abdul Mannan.
The signatories slammed the Opposition for treating the devastating Upper Assam monsoon floods as a routine relief operation. They argued leaders missed a chance to demand government accountability for failing to solve recurrent flooding. Instead of focusing on the state's mismanagement, the Opposition is busy bickering. Infighting remains rampant. The group specifically called out Raijor Dal workers for harassing eminent intellectual and forum adviser Hiren Gohain.
Critics say the Opposition wastes energy rehashing decade-old Congress corruption instead of fighting current BJP policies. The appeal identified systemic problems including land acquisition, rising prices, unemployment, and an education crisis. It alleged that the government steals indigenous and Adivasi land to benefit large corporations.
The group wants an honest self-assessment and a unified mass movement. They believe individual parties are failing to organize effective resistance. The statement warns that voters will punish continued political ego trips. "If the Opposition keeps quarrelling among itself while these burning issues go unaddressed, time will not forgive anyone," the appeal stated.
