Assam Census Worker Escapes Armed Attack in Bongaigaon

Guwahati: A census enumerator escaped a violent confrontation in Assam’s Bongaigaon district. Teacher Bhaskar Chandra Das was working in Chautaki village when a local man targeted him with a sharp fishing weapon. The attack occurred at House Listing Block Number 253 within the Srijangram Development Block.

Das abandoned his two-wheeler and scrambled into a nearby home to survive. He remained trapped until Srijangram Revenue Officer Naba Jyoti Das alerted the local authorities. A team from the North Salmara Police Outpost arrived shortly after to extract the teacher. Shivaprasad Kalita, the officer-in-charge of the outpost, successfully led the rescue operation.

The assailant, identified as Bipanna Das alias Bapan, vanished before officers could place him in handcuffs. Police are still looking into the incident. The near-miss has left officials shaken. Field workers face high risks during door-to-door duties. As one official noted, the incident has "highlighted concerns over the security of census personnel conducting door-to-door enumeration, particularly in areas where officials are required to carry out field visits independently."
