Bongaigaon teacher found dead in pond mystery

Guwahati: A former school teacher and cultural activist, Nilmoni Roy, turned up dead in an Assam pond Monday night. He worked at Abhayapuri Sankardev Shishu Niketan and performed as a Bihu artiste and pepa player. Locals found his motorcycle parked by the roadside at Pahartali in Abhayapuri around 10:30 p.m. July 20.

Passersby grew suspicious when they saw a helmet floating in a nearby pond. A team from the Abhayapuri Police Station arrived and pulled Roy from the water. He still wore his helmet. The body was discovered about 500 metres from his residence at Pahartali Khudra Narikola.

Roy had been returning from the market when he died. Officers found his groceries still attached to the motorcycle parked across the road from the water. Investigators now face a grim puzzle. "The circumstances leading to the death remain unclear." Police are weighing the possibility of an accident against foul play as the investigation continues.
