Shillong: West Bengal police raided the home of local Trinamool Congress leader Papai Ghosh on Saturday. They found a stash of arms and ammunition inside his Baharampur residence. Ghosh, the town president of the Trinamool Congress Youth Wing, faced a marauder charge in 2017. He went missing after the Bharatiya Janata Party won the West Bengal Assembly polls. He surrendered at a district court earlier this month. Police arrested him on August 14. Marathon questioning sessions led investigators to the weapons cache.
The recovery list is long. Officers seized seven firearms, five magazines, and 186 bullets. This haul includes two 9 mm pistols, three 7.65 mm pistols, and two single-shot pipe guns. Authorities are now digging into the background of this cache. "The police are questioning them to know of the purpose within which they were carrying such huge consignments of arms and ammunition and to whom they were supposed to deliver that consignment," a source confirmed.
Saktipur police also moved on Saturday. They caught Jabbar Mondal and Alamgir Sheikh with more illegal gear. Officers found three firearms, six magazines, and 40 rounds of bullets on the pair. The BJP government, under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, continues to hunt for illegal weapons. They are focusing efforts on sensitive border zones like Malda and Murshidabad.
