Shillong: Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared the Siliguri Corridor secure on Saturday. He claimed the area, once a hub for infiltration under the previous Trinamool Congress regime, now stands as an impregnable border. Shah inspected the surveillance systems at the 19th battalion Border Out Post under the North Bengal Frontier.
The Modi government added more watchtowers and high-tech gear to the line. Shah told the public, "The Prime Minister Narendra Modi government has increased the number of watchtowers along the borders and equipped them with state-of-the-art technology, making border security stronger and impregnable."
He chaired a security meeting in Siliguri, Darjeeling district, with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The officials mapped out plans to choke cross-border smuggling and stop illegal entries along the Indo-Bangladesh border. During his visit, Shah inaugurated development projects totaling Rs 77.06 crore and joined Border Security Force members for high tea.
The minister arrived in Siliguri Friday night for a series of four back-to-back Saturday engagements. He heads to Kolkata tonight for further meetings. Shah returns to New Delhi Sunday afternoon. His entire trip focuses on administrative tasks with no political rallies on the docket.
