New documentary examines the social conscience of Bhupen Hazarika

Shillong: Filmmaker Utpal Borpujari is preparing to share the life and social legacy of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. He produced an 82-minute documentary titled Manuhar Gaan. The film highlights the artist's focus on inequality and justice. It moves beyond his famous hits like Dil Hoom Hoom Kare. The official trailer and poster arrived Saturday at the Guwahati Press Club. Manisha Hazarika, president of the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust, performed the reveal.

Borpujari directed the project to expose audiences outside Assam and Bengal to Hazarika's political depth. He said, "Although Dr. Hazarika is known across India as a great musician, apart from songs such as Dil Hoom Hoom Kare and Ganga Behti Ho Kyon, very few people outside Assam and Bengal are aware of the depth of his social commitment as an artist." The film took eight years to finish. Funding stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most footage came from 2018. The rest was captured last year.

The documentary features interviews with the late Dr. Dilip Kumar Datta, Sudakshina Sarma, Hrishiraj Sarma, and Ratna Ojah. Musical associates Kamal Kataki and Rupam Talukdar also appear. The project includes diverse voices from Loknath Goswami to grassroots singers like Manik Chandra Bordoloi and Molan Gogoi. Child singer Chaokhun Gogoi provides a younger perspective. 92X26 Films produced the work. Dolly Borpujari, Prabhat Chandra Borpuyari, and Abhijit Bhuyan served as producers.

The team kept hours of unused interviews. They plan to release this extra content on YouTube for researchers later. A panel discussion followed the trailer launch. Experts debated if the world truly understands Hazarika's creative reach. The film is a centenary tribute. It captures the humanist heart of the man. The final edit includes sound design by Debajit Gayan and cinematography by Chida Bora.
