Guwahati: Borluit Productions hit the brakes on its debut feature film, Dipholu. The movie was set to hit theaters August 21. Executives pulled the plug due to the ongoing fallout from the catastrophic floods in Assam. The state remains in shambles. Many families in remote areas lost their homes, livestock, land, and livelihoods. They are starting over from nothing.
Director Nekib struggled with the call. It is his first feature. He visited hard-hit villages earlier this month to see the wreckage firsthand. The loss stopped the celebration. Nekib said, "Honestly, this was a very difficult decision for all of us. Dipholu is my first film, and we have been waiting for this day for a very long time. We were looking forward to sharing the film with our audiences tomorrow. But when we look at what so many people across Assam are going through, especially those in the remote villages who have lost so much and are still trying to rebuild their lives, it did not feel right to celebrate a film release at this moment."
Floodwaters have pulled back in some spots. The pain remains. The studio plans to drop a new release date later. For now, the team stands with the victims. They hope for a steady recovery for every community hit by the disaster.
