Guwahati: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi demanded a 10,000 crore special package from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 20. He wants the cash to repair wrecked schools, shops, roads, and water systems after historic floods. The state has battled high water since July 19. Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Charaideo took the hardest hits. Official records show 105 people are dead.
Gogoi serves as Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He posted his demand on X, stating, "I request PM Modi to give a Rs 10,000 crore special package for Assam to cover the economic loss of the people and the damage to rural infrastructure." The Centre has released 379.35 crore so far through the State Disaster Response Fund.
The Congress leader turned his fire on the PM CARES Fund. He pointed to an audited report showing the fund holds 8,452 crore. Records suggest only 87.85 lakh went out during the 2024-25 fiscal year. He claims nearly 93 per cent of that money sits in fixed deposits. Gogoi argued the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund handles emergencies better. He accused the government of ignoring the state while locals relied on private donations. He asked, "Does PM really CARE for the people of Assam?"
