Guwahati: Artist Neelim Mahanta sprayed a fresh mural in Demow, Sivasagar, demanding the Centre label the Upper Assam floods a national disaster. The artwork features a caricature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi clutching a cup labeled Assam Flood. It carries a blunt message: Declare it National Disaster.
Mahanta wants federal action. He built the piece to amplify voices from the waterlogged region and force a shift in disaster policy. The mural highlights the cycle of destruction hitting communities across Upper Assam. It demands better support for victims left in the wake of the rising waters.
Social media erupted following the display. Supporters and critics are now bickering over flood management tactics and the state of disaster response. Mahanta made his frustration clear online. He posted: "How many more tears? How much more suffering? How many more dead bodies? How many more ruins must we witness before their neglect comes to an end? Modi ji, Assam will remember this neglect. We demand that the present flood situation in Upper Assam be declared a National Disaster. We want action, not your silence."
