Guwahati: Assam police arrested eight men in Guwahati following a violent confrontation with law enforcement. The arrests stem from an investigation at Hatigaon Police Station, officially logged as Case No. 172/2026 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Officers identified the suspects as Akhtar Hussain, 28, Nur Jamal Miya, 36, Manuwar Ali, 26, Imadul Choudhury, 23, Mirjan Ali, 27, Majibur Rahman, 26, Ajay Ali, 21, and Mirajul Ali, 21. Authorities claim these men assaulted public servants and obstructed official duties. Police further alleged the group created an imminent danger to the lives and safety of personnel at the scene.

The incident traces back to an inquiry into residential structures and a tin wall built on disputed land at Balijan Path, located in the Sundarban area of Hatigaon. Joyshree Goswami Mahanta originally brought the allegations regarding the illegal construction to the attention of the authorities.

The eight men appeared before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Kamrup (M), Guwahati. Investigators requested five days of police custody for Mirajul Ali and Majibur Rahman. They asked for the other six men to be placed in judicial custody. The court has yet to finalize its ruling on these requests.
