Guwahati: Tension boiled over in Betoni Majgaon village after two men allegedly tried to steal goats. The duo arrived in a battery-operated e-rickshaw in the Kaloulowa village area before residents caught one man red-handed. The crowd tied up Hirakjyoti Baruah and held him until Moran Police arrived to take him into custody.
The second suspect attempted a getaway in the e-rickshaw. Residents intercepted him in Betoni Majgaon, torched the vehicle, and turned on the driver. The attacker used a sharp weapon to inflict a serious hand injury. The man is now at Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh in critical condition.
The violence coincided with an ambush at Tapon Liangmai village. The Working Committee of the Joint Tribes Council, which represents the Inpui, Liangmai, Rongmei, and Zeme communities, is holding up post-mortem exams for the deceased. They demand the return of Ajinbou's missing head. The group issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the governments of India and Manipur, stating that "post-mortem examinations of the deceased would remain suspended until Ajinbou's missing head was recovered and returned to his family for a dignified burial." They also named Thangboi Kipgen, David Hangsing, and Dr. Sailen Haokip as alleged perpetrators.
