Guwahati: NHRC Special Monitor Uma Kant descended on Kamrup district, Assam, on August 20. He arrived to audit the local rollout of rural development schemes. Officials from the Panchayat and Rural Development Department lined up to present their progress reports. They detailed ongoing work through the Assam State Rural Livelihoods Mission. The scope of their mission is wide.
Kant toured the Boko Development Block Office to talk shop with representatives from Gram Panchayats and Anchalik Panchayat. He liked what he saw during the briefings. Kant described the current development efforts as “attractive and promising.” He demanded the department keep the momentum high to see real results on the ground.
The monitor pushed for stricter plastic waste management across the region. He wants local villages to stop the flow of trash through better enforcement of existing bans. Success depends on the work done by Gram Panchayats. He ordered teams to enforce waste segregation at the source, splitting dry items from wet ones, and pushed for better plastic recycling programs.
Amrit Sarovar projects also fell under his microscope. He noted that building these sites is only half the job. Officials must now teach local communities how to keep the projects in good working order. He expects the staff to guide residents through the daily maintenance of these sites.
