Guwahati: Locals in Assam's Kamrup district are fed up. Residents at the Boko Block Development Office report that staff routinely blow off their morning duties. People arrive from remote villages only to wait until midday for help. Essential administrative tasks sit idle while the desks stay empty.
Witnesses claim the office was a ghost town on the day of the complaint. No accountants, senior assistants, or computer operators appeared before noon. Only clerical staff and chowkidars remained on site. These workers noted that the office start time is officially 10 am.
Block Development Officer Tapasi Debnath blamed the situation on external obligations. She claimed she had to attend meetings at the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner's office. This excuse did not sit well with the public. Locals questioned why these meetings cannot happen over video or audio calls. They argued that these trips create massive logistical and financial burdens for those who live far away.
The office maintains a roster of 25 staff members, including two BDOs, four computer operators, and two engineers. Despite these numbers, the doors essentially remain shut for hours. The situation has drawn heat from local leadership. Boko-Chaygaon Sub-Divisional Officer Priyanshu Bharadwaj and Kamrup District Development Officer Siddhartha Goswami promised a full inquiry. Bharadwaj stated, "the matter would be investigated and appropriate action would be taken based on the findings."
