Guwahati: Assam has cleared a major hurdle for Census 2027. State data confirms a 95.42 percent completion rate for the self-enumeration exercise. This push reached 12,20,536 households across all 35 districts. While one report cited 11,64,586 submissions, officials confirmed the window closed on August 16. Cachar, Sribhumi, and Kokrajhar emerged as the top-performing districts.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the public for the high turnout. He took to social media to thank the state. “I am deeply grateful to the people of Assam for their enthusiastic participation and for taking the time to accurately fill in the required details,” Sarma said.
The next phase started Monday. It involves the Houselisting and Housing Census. Trained workers will now hit the streets to verify data. This field work runs through September 15. Biswajit Pegu, the Director of Census Operations, led a press conference on Monday to outline the path forward. He emphasized the core principle of the operation: No Omission, No Duplication. Partha Pegu, the State Nodal Officer, joined him to urge continued cooperation.
Officials moved quickly to address privacy concerns. Census data remains protected by the Census Act, 1948. It cannot be used as evidence in a court of law. Enumerators will visit homes across the state for the next several weeks. Residents should prepare for these arrivals to ensure the state record remains accurate.

State Nodal Officer Partha Pegu holds the additional title of Additional Secretary in Assam’s General Administration Department. Officials view the high participation rate as a shift in how citizens take ownership of the administrative process.
Sarma framed the effort as a new state benchmark for self-enumeration. The Chief Minister also issued a direct call to action for the coming weeks, stating, "I urge everyone to extend the same cooperation to enumerators in the next phase of this nationwide exercise, as we work together to build a comprehensive and accurate record of our state."
