Guwahati: Lakhimpur police finally ended an eight-year manhunt this week. They arrested 90-year-old Abdul Matlib at his residence in No. 1 Ahmedpur village. Officers from the Bangalmora Police Outpost moved in after the suspect returned home to visit his family. He had been hiding since the authorities filed charges against him in 2018.

The case stems from the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act of 2012. Matlib was 82 at the time officials registered the molestation charges. He managed to evade capture for nearly a decade after slipping away from investigators. Police acted on a tip regarding his homecoming.

This arrest marks a rare milestone in the state. Local officials claim he is likely "among the oldest persons arrested in Assam in a case registered under the POCSO Act." Matlib remains in police custody as legal proceedings against him move forward.
