Guwahati: Dhing MLA Mehboob Muktar intervened to slash an 8 lakh rupee hospital bill by more than 7 lakh rupees. Sanjib Saikia, a man from Aathgaon, died at a private hospital in Guwahati after battling high blood pressure. Saikia served as the sole earner for his household. His death left behind an elderly mother, a young child, and a wife facing crushing debt.
The private clinic refused to release Saikia’s body until the family settled the massive outstanding balance. Desperate, the survivors reached out to Muktar. The MLA arrived at the facility and pressed hospital management for a resolution. His talks succeeded. The hospital waived the bulk of the fees. Muktar also sorted out the logistics to move the body back to Aathgaon.
The widow thanked the politician for his help during their darkest moment. She explained that the family had been left helpless, stating, "the MLA’s intervention had helped them overcome the immediate crisis." Muktar promised the family further support in the future. The incident shines a light on the brutal financial toll families face when a primary provider dies unexpectedly.
