Assam Courts Hand Down Life Sentences in Two Child Assault Cases

Guwahati: Assam courts put two men away for life on Wednesday, October 7. Judges in Kamrup and Goalpara districts closed the books on separate sexual assault cases involving minors. Justice moved fast. Both defendants received life terms for their crimes.

In Rangia, a court convicted Ramzan Ali for the 2015 rape of a minor girl in Dhuhibala village. The victim’s family reported the crime to Kayan Police Station, leading to Special POCSO Case No. 23/18. Special Judge Mukul Chetia found Ali guilty under Section 376(2)(I) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of the POCSO Act. Special Public Prosecutor Devajit Saikia handled the state’s case.

The court hit Ali with a Rs 5,000 fine. He must pay the survivor Rs 1 lakh in compensation. "The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him and directed that Rs 1 lakh be paid to the survivor as compensation," stated the court records regarding the final verdict. Ali will serve the full life sentence.

Meanwhile, the Special Judge’s Court in Goalpara handed down a life sentence to Mominul Islam. He faced conviction for sexually assaulting a minor. The judge ordered Islam to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 to conclude the proceedings.
