Assam Court Hands 20-Year Prison Term to Rapist

Guwahati: A special POCSO court in Kokrajhar, Assam, sentenced Sahidul Ali to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment on September 11. The case centers on the 2022 rape of a Class 10 student. Ali was in his mid-30s when the crimes occurred. He faces a stiff penalty.

Special Judge Nurjamal Hoque delivered the verdict for Special Case No. 28/2022. This follows the original filing of Kokrajhar Police Station Case No. 216/2022. The court found Ali guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

"The court found Ali guilty under the relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act."

Beyond the prison term, the judge ordered Ali to pay a 10,000 rupee fine. If he fails to pay, he will serve an additional six months behind bars. Special Public Prosecutor Manjit Kumar Ghos confirmed that Ali kidnapped and raped the minor victim before the trial concluded at the Kokrajhar court.
