Guwahati: Goroimari police raided a warehouse in the Kanahara village of Kamrup district. They seized nearly 15 tonnes of suspected tobacco products. The bust netted 374 bags containing roughly 14,960 kilograms of raw tobacco. The haul has an estimated market value exceeding Rs 20 lakh.
Officers arrested Asadul Haque, a native of West Bengal, at the scene. He faces accusations of running an illegal trade involving nicotine-laced zarda without any necessary permits, trade licenses, or supporting documentation. Haque failed to produce a single valid document during the raid in the Chamaria LAC area.
"An investigation has been launched to trace the source of the consignment and determine whether other people were involved in the alleged illegal trade," police said. Goroimari Police Station officer-in-charge Abdul Momin led the operation. Goroimari Revenue Circle Officer Kashyapi Kashyap stood by during the search.
