Guwahati: Bongaigaon police tracked down and arrested Baldev Singh and Balram Choudhary for running a high-stakes extortion racket. The duo traveled from Rajasthan to Assam to shake down milk distributors in the Kokila area. They claimed to hold positions as State Director and Assistant Manager of a non-existent Crime Investigation Department under the Indian government.
They relied on intimidation. The suspects threatened their targets with bogus legal action to force cash payments. Bongaigaon Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta detailed the operation during a press conference on July 22. Mahatta noted the arrests exposed a racket involving individuals posing as investigators to defraud the public. The police are currently looking into whether these men pulled similar scams in other states.
Officers seized a haul of evidence during the arrest. They took two luxury vehicles, registration numbers RJ 04 DK 6344 and RJ 14 GU 6398, four mobile phones, ATM cards, and a stash of fake identity cards. Authorities are now verifying the authenticity of those documents. The investigation continues as police search for more victims.
