Guwahati: Bongaigaon police tracked down and arrested Mehbub Alam for running a shakedown scheme. Alam, who calls Jamunamukh in Hojai district home, leveraged the identities of law enforcement to line his pockets. He specifically targeted individuals allegedly tied to the drug trade or intoxicant businesses.

The suspect misused the name of the district Senior Superintendent of Police, or SSP, to apply pressure. He also snatched photographs of various police officers from across Assam to intimidate his victims. The scheme relied on fear. Bongaigaon Sadar Police Station logged the incident as Case No. 263/26.

Authorities booked Alam under sections 204, 308(7), and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. They hauled the man before a court to request interrogation time. Investigators successfully secured two days of police custody to peel back the layers of this extortion racket.

The investigation remains active. Officers are currently "probing the full extent of the alleged activities and looking for additional information linked to the case." Police work continues as they try to determine how far this operation reached.
