Kohima: The Angami Students' Union issued a demand for immediate action on August 1. They want the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited to secure dangerous road stretches. Monsoon rains bring frequent landslips, mudslides, and rockfalls to the region. These corridors serve as lifelines for commerce and students.
ASU vice president Zhovito Rikha and general secretary Rajuselie Chucha voiced their alarm regarding the deteriorating conditions. They argue that waiting for disasters to strike before clearing roads is no longer acceptable. The union warned that failing to act risks complete blockages that threaten public safety and academic schedules.
The organization insists that safety must come before development. They want the NHIDCL and its executing agencies to start comprehensive slope stabilization work immediately. Specific demands include the installation of slope protection nets and continuous monitoring of high-risk zones. The union also wants round-the-clock emergency response teams on standby.
The group hopes for a swift response. As the union noted in its statement, they are urging the NHIDCL to "address the hazards before any major disaster occurs during the ongoing monsoon season." Preventing a tragedy is the goal.
