AASU activists form human chains across Tinsukia to protest crumbling roads

Guwahati: Members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) linked arms in a human chain across Tinsukia on Friday. They demanded urgent repairs to damaged roads and better safety for all commuters. The protest serves as part of a larger statewide push by the student group to expose the worsening state of infrastructure. Local commuters struggle daily with deep potholes, especially near active national highway construction sites.

AASU president Utpal Sarma slammed the state of the roads. He pointed out the irony of paying tolls on dangerous stretches of pavement. "Several roads across Assam remain in a deplorable condition, particularly stretches where construction is being carried out in the name of national highways," Sarma said.

Safety concerns are peaking following a string of recent crashes, including a major incident at Khetri. Protesters demanded that the government rebuild these broken paths and install proper safety measures at all construction zones. The group warned officials that they must act now to prevent further tragedy. "No family should have to lose a loved one or suffer hardship because of an unsafe road," Sarma added.
