Kohima: The Western Sümi Hoho (WSH) fired a formal request to the Chief Electoral Officer of Nagaland on September 18. They want a dedicated Assistant Election Officer for Niuland district. Locals face constant trouble. The district currently lacks an office for election services.
Niuland became the 14th district in Nagaland in December 2021. Despite this status, it still lacks an AEO. Residents of 105 villages currently trek outside their home district to manage voter registration or fix errors on EPIC cards. This affects 85 villages in 4-Ghaspani-I and 20 villages in 5-Ghaspani-II.
The WSH argues that a new district fails its people if residents must leave to access basic civic needs. They need local governance that works. The organization stated, "establishing a new district would serve little purpose if citizens continued to cross district boundaries to access essential civic services."
Streamlining the electoral process remains a priority. WSH leaders believe a local officer will boost grassroots participation and keep democratic rights secure. The group now waits for the state election office to act without delay.
