Kohima: Nagaland Public Accounts Committee Chairman Mhathung Yanthan joined legislative leaders in Thiruvananthapuram on November 3 and 4. They met for the Conference of Chairpersons of Public Accounts Committees. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla opened the event, which focused on audit, accountability, and good governance. Twenty-five states sent chairpersons to the two-day gathering.
Key figures attended the inaugural session, including Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. Lok Sabha PAC chairman K.C. Venugopal led the plenary discussions. Birla also released a souvenir featuring an article by Yanthan, who noted, "The Public Accounts Committee: Strengthening Legislative Oversight for Better Governance – Reflections from Nagaland."
Yanthan used the platform to demand faster CAG report reviews and digital monitoring for Nagaland. The attendees pushed for a unified audit system across state and national lines. They recommended creating digital platforms to share best practices and suggested holding at least three PAC sittings every month. Further goals included using forensic tools during audits and increasing the frequency of joint meetings between federal and state PACs.
The conference ended with the unanimous adoption of the Keralam Resolution. This agreement mandates rigorous examination standards for all public spending. It also requires a reliable system for PACs to coordinate and trade effective methods for oversight.
