Kohima: The Nagaland Apex Weavers and Artisans Cooperative Federation Ltd. kicked off the Hathkargha Mela State Handloom Expo on Friday. Located at GK Turf near the ADC Court in Dimapur, the event features 60 stalls filled with handloom and handicraft goods from local and out-of-state artisans.

The expo runs for 14 days. It aims to boost income through direct sales while giving creators a better marketing platform. Orenthung Lotha, the Commissioner and secretary to the Government of Nagaland and chairman of WEAFED Ltd., attended the opening as the special guest.

Lotha pushed for cooperation. He wants the event to provide real business opportunities instead of just acting as a simple exhibition. He noted that the Ministry of Textiles provides financial aid for these events and expects clear returns for the workers. "The objective was not merely to bring artisans together for an exhibition, but to ensure they secured meaningful business opportunities and received adequate returns for their participation," Lotha said.

WEAFED managing director Gwarungo Khing chose the site for its practical benefits. The location near the futsal ground offers high visibility and easy access to essential amenities like food and washrooms for visiting artisans. Khing noted that while locals can head home easily, out-of-state participants need reliable infrastructure to sustain their work. The federation expects this focus on logistics to drive better sales and support the livelihoods of all involved.
