Kohima: Dimapur celebrated the 12th National Handloom Day on Friday inside the Conference Hall at Hotel Saramati. The event gathered local weavers, artisans, and government officials to honor traditional craftsmanship. It also looked toward the future of the sector. The program opened with ceremonial lamp lighting and formal presentations.
Biswajit Das, assistant director of the Weavers’ Service Centre in Toluvi, led the welcome address. He pushed for stronger backing for local weavers and the preservation of heritage skills. Er. Y. Lipongse Thongtsar, managing director of NHHDC Ltd., detailed the industry vision. He noted the goal is ensuring "quality production and ongoing efforts to support the artisan community."
Chief guest Prasielie Pienyu, chairman of NHHDC Ltd., joined the festivities. The morning featured a fashion show highlighting indigenous attire and a folk performance by Chakhesang women. The event finished with a ceremony where local artisans received certificates.
A technical workshop followed the main stage events. Experts coached weavers on modernizing their work. The sessions focused on technology upgrades, dyeing techniques, and designing products that satisfy current market trends. Attendees also studied new methods for marketing their handloom goods to reach wider audiences.
