Kohima: The Joint Council Forum in Dimapur has put its foot down on local extortion. It officially reaffirmed a hard line against illegal taxation and unauthorized money collection by unions and various groups. Business owners must now stop handing over cash for donations, subscriptions, or any other financial demands lacking lawful authority.
This policy stems from a unanimous vote held on July 16. The Forum warns that these predatory practices hike up the price of goods and services for everyone. The group’s statement declared its “firm stand against illegal taxation, extortion and unauthorised collection of money.”
The Forum demands strict compliance from every shop and office under its watch. If anyone tries to squeeze money out of a business, owners should report it immediately to the JCF or their local council representatives. The directive carries the backing of the Churches Colony Council, NST Colony Council, Middle Point Council, Nyamo Lotha Colony, and Khermahal.
